The owner and design team are pursuing complete ecological restoration of this coastal site, which is located on a peninsula overlooking Nauset Harbor. Wilkinson Ecological Design, the team restoration ecologist, completed initial invasive species mitigation in early fall 2020. Hutker Architects will replace the existing mid-century modern dwelling with a contemporary modern house and detached garage with guesthouse that is thoughtfully woven together with a series of landscape spaces and embedded within the restored landscape.
The central design theme is stormwater conveyance to support long-term ecological resilience of this coastal ecosystem. The structures and landscape are seamlessly designed and measured to create visual conveyance of stormwater through the landscape to a series of infiltration gardens and landscape elements with direct connection to the restoration areas throughout the site.
The landscape program includes an entry garden and native tree grove, outdoor gathering areas, fire element, leisure and sport lawn, mown paths through the restoration areas, pool terrace, kayak storage and pickleball court.
